Description

The rectangular plaque is composed of four registers with a roundel of the Virgin Blachernistissa (Bust) interrupting the rectangular levels. In the quadrants around the Virgin and Child are the Evangelists who hold scrolls and seem to gesture towards the central medallion. Saints and Seraphim occupy the other spaces of the plaque. Inscriptions have been carved into the borders. Ornamental cornices which have been adorned with either a pseduo-Kufic script or a vine motif decorate the quadrants of the bookcover. Lanterns(?) seem to hang from the upper and lower sides with the illuminated end touching the plaque at its horizontals.
