Textile: Epimanikia with Annunciation
Description
Embroidery, 2 pieces

Images 1 & 2: When viewed together, these two textiles tell the story of the Annunciation: when the Angel Gabriel came to the Virgin Mary to announce that she will bear the son of God (Luke 1:26-38). Beneath a pentefoil arch adorned with omega shaped vines (?), is the Angel Gabriel. The columns that he stands between have been stitched in such a way where the column appears to convey architectural polychromy with the red of the background peaking through voids in gold thread in a gold checkboard pattern. The angel Gabriel's garments are made of gold and light pink thread thread and his hair has been braided at the front . Surrounding the architectural set and Gabriel are large curving vines and flowers reminiscent of a Nilotic scene.

Images 3 & 4: In a near identical setting, the Virgin Mary stands beneath the pentefoil arch. She wears a gold a light pink garment and a powder blue head wrap. Just in front of her is a columnar stand with an amphora containing flowers (lilies?) in bloom. Like the Angel Gabriel in the previous two images, she stands on a stitched bed of yellow, green, and a dark blue foundation that may communicate an outdoor setting.
