Description

Embroidery, 2 pieces
Images 1 & 2: When viewed together, these two textiles tell the story of the Annunciation: when the Angel Gabriel came to the Virgin Mary to announce that she will bear the son of God (Luke 1:26-38). The angel Gabriel is set against a green background and wears a gold robe. Wrapped around his waist is a belt with alternating shades of brown. His proper right arm is raised at about shoulder height and he makes a blessing gesture. A staff seems to float at Gabriel's fingertips; his proper left arm is not visible. Swirling vines and plants flank Gabriel at both sides.
Images 3 & 4: In a near identical setting the Virgin Mary stands facing proper right with her arms slightly outstretched and hands raised in a kind of orans pose. Behind her is a table with two bowls (?) or pots (?).
