At the center of the scene is the Man of the Sorrows, also known in the west as the Imago Pietatis (Christ of Pity). Christ is shown in a sarcophagus only covered from the waist down. He bears the wounds of the crucifixion and the side wound. At proper right is the Virigin Mary and at proper left is St. John the Evangelist. Placed in roundels in each corner of the Man of Sorrows scene are the symbols of the evangelists. Composing the border of the textile is a Greek inscription with with a cross and Victory of Jesus symbols (IC/XC NI/KA) in the top left corner.
